I am a clinical lecturer within the Critical Care and Perioperative Research Group at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. I have over 20 years of clinical experience in Critical Care with 15 years of experience in Quality Improvement and Implementation and over 10 years as an applied healthcare researcher. I was co-lead for the quality improvement intervention within the EPOCH Trial, the largest study of peri-operative improvement globally and an adviser for the Health Foundation funded Emergency Laparotomy Collaborative and Royal College of Surgeons funded Chole-QuIC  collaboratives. These projects were the basis for my doctoral research, completed in 2021, entitled, “What influences the effectiveness of Quality Improvement  programmes in Surgery”. I am part of the core investigator team for the Optimising Shared decision-makIng for high-RIsk major Surgery (OSIRIS) research programme and the NIHR Global Health Group for Perioperative and Critical Care research. My current research interests focus around: how complex interventions really work within the trials designed to evaluate them, what we can do to make implementation science more effective to produce sustained improvements in care and, relatedly, what are the root causes of failure to reliably deliver evidence-based care. I undertake mixed-methods research in these areas within both high-income (primarily UK) and low-and-middle income (primarily African) contexts.
